Joan G. Schubert, a long-time resident of Pittsburgh, PA and more recently
Langhorne, PA and Yardley PA, passed away on January 6, 2024. She was 91 years
old.
The daughter of Robert J. and Kathryn Graef Graham, Joan was born on September
16, 1932 in Red Bank, NJ. She was raised in Woodbridge, NJ and graduated from
Woodbridge High School in 1949.
Upon graduation, Joan set off for college. Soon thereafter, she transferred to
Syracuse University where she met Jack, her husband of 62 years, on a blind date. A
Nutritional Sciences major, Joan graduated from Syracuse in 1953. Joan and Jack
married that same year, 10 days after Joan’s 21 st birthday.
Joan worked as a hospital nutritionist early in her marriage and, after raising her
children, as a nutrition counselor in a pediatric dental practice. She and Jack moved
many times during their years together, and, as a result, Joan was an expert packer
who could make anything fit into any space. This skill came in handy later in life
when she and Jack traveled the world.
Joan was a skilled seamstress and quilter and an awesome cook and baker. Her
apple pie, Christmas thumbprint and “round ballie” cookies (to name a few!) were
unsurpassed.
Joan was a true “Jersey girl,” never seeing a NJ beach she did not love. She spent
many years raising her family in Wall, NJ where her beach of choice was Avon by the
Sea. In later years, Joan and Jack spent vacation time at various NJ beaches including
Lavallette and Beach Haven, Long Beach Island, NJ.
Most of all, Joan is remembered for doing anything and everything for her family.
She put her heart and soul into everyone she loved. Nothing brought Joan more joy
than her family.
Joan was predeceased by her beloved husband Jack in 2016 and her sister Barbara
in 2017. Joan is survived by two daughters, Kathryn (William) Whyland and Karen
(William) Schubert-Ramirez. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Matthew
(Kathryn), Elizabeth (Brian) Roy, and Meaghan (Seth) Martin. Joan was delighted to
be the great-grandmother of Charlotte, Isabelle, Jackson, Cameron, Mason, and
Claire. She is also survived by her brother, Jim, nieces and nephews, and the
Romero family, Doris, Rene, Gabriella, and Alexandra.
Burial will be in Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Newtown, PA where
Jack and Joan will be together again. Services are private. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made in Joan’s name to the “General Scholarship Fund at Falk
College in the memory of Joan G. Schubert” at Syracuse University. Donations may
be mailed to Syracuse University Office of Gift Planning, 640 Skytop Road, Second
Floor, Syracuse, NY 13244.
