John Wilson “Wil” Cassel, 89, of East Windsor, NJ, died May 21, 2025. He was born to the late Linford B. and Muriel (Wilson) Cassel on October 13, 1935, in Philadelphia, PA, and graduated from Haverford High School in 1953. Growing up, he spent many summers playing and working in Ocean City, NJ, where he developed a lifelong love of the ocean and body surfing.
Wil enjoyed a long career as a mechanical engineer, getting his degree through the Drexel Institute of Technology’s co-op program, where he alternated working at Sinclair’s refinery in Marcus Hook with taking classes at Drexel. While he was a student there, he met the love of his life, Beverly, who happened to be the nurse taking care of his mother at Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia. They married in 1957 and had three children, moving from Philadelphia to Rancocas Woods, NJ, to Dayton, OH, and finally settling in Hatboro and then Yardley, PA. Wil and Bev were a team couple for several years for Marriage Encounter, and Wil enjoyed traveling with Bev and his family to the Jersey shore, and later to Dewey Beach, DE.
Wil worked at a number of different companies over the years, retired from Dow Jones, and then continued to work part-time well into his 70’s. Like many engineers, Wil was fascinated by how things worked, and his family and friends enjoyed his interesting perspectives, quirky sense of humor and inquisitive mind. He could play the violin by ear and would often entertain the family during the holidays.
Wil is survived by his three children, Kimberly (Bob) Light of Phoenix, AZ, Kay (Lou) Mulliniks of Naples, FL, and Thomas Cassel; and four grandchildren, Kristin, Daniel, Thomas II, and Trevor. He was predeceased by his wife, Beverly, and a grandson, Andrew, as well as his companion, Pat. A private celebration of life will be held by his family
